On Kindness

A warm heart is a lighthouse in any storm.

A man steadying his friend on a windy coastal path, a lighthouse glowing in the distance

Steady warmth is the most reliable signal.

The explanation

Storms are not always weather. They are bad news, sudden grief, failure, or a week when nothing works. In those storms, a warm person does not need to solve the problem. They only need to keep their light on so others can find their bearings.

The story

The month my father was dying I stopped answering most messages. Grief made everything sound wrong — the advice, the platitudes, the exclamation points. But a colleague named Daniel, whom I barely knew outside of meetings, sent me one short message every single morning. Not a paragraph. Not a question that required answering. Just: 'Thinking of you.

Here for coffee, silence, or a walk. No reply needed.' I never replied. He kept sending them. Some mornings, sitting in the hospital cafeteria at 6 a.m. with a paper cup of terrible coffee, that ping was the first evidence that a world existed outside the ward. After the funeral I went back to work like a person walking underwater. Daniel was in the first meeting I attended.

He didn't hug me, didn't ask how I was, didn't perform sympathy. He just slid a cup of coffee across the table exactly the way I like it and gave me one small nod. Months later, when the fog started to thin, I realized I had navigated the whole storm by his light. He had not tried to be the sun. He had only, without fail, kept his small lamp on. Some day I hope to be that reliable for someone else.
